Which Wheels Work Best?

Last week, we explored how the shape of a wheel can affect the way it rolls. We used plastic cups and taped them together in two different ways – one pair with the bottoms taped together, and another pair with the tops taped together.

Then we rolled the cups down a special ramp that looked like rails, with a gap in the middle for the cups to balance on. Everyone was curious to see how each design would roll!

Some cups rolled smoothly, while others wobbled or tipped over – and each trial gave us something new to observe. The students had fun testing their predictions and watching how each pair moved.

After experimenting, we discussed what we noticed and thought about what made some rolls different from others. Everyone stayed focused and curious, trying out ideas and asking questions like real scientists.

This experiment helped us learn about balance, shape, and how design can affect the motion of wheels. It was a great hands-on way to explore science and have fun at the same time!

We’re already looking forward to our next discovery!
