The weather is getting hotter and hotter, which can only mean one thing; summer is here! And what better way to cool down on a warm day than with a nice, refreshing glass of lemonade?
Before we got started, we had a chat about lemonade. Had everyone tried it before? Surprisingly, some of our children had never tasted lemonade! We talked about what we might need to make it, and the children eagerly shared their ideas. While some confidently explained that we’d need lemons, water, and sugar, others weren’t quite convinced that lemons could become such a delicious drink!
As part of our summer theme, we even imagined opening our very own lemonade stand at PAP Gotanda. That got us thinking… every lemonade stand needs cheerful decorations!
To create our decorations, each child received a lemon outline on bright lime green paper. Instead of reaching for crayons, we tried something a little different. The children carefully tore yellow paper into tiny pieces and glued them onto their lemons to create a colourful collage. Tearing and placing the paper may look simple, but it’s a wonderful way to strengthen fine motor skills while encouraging creativity and concentration.
Once our lemons were bright and sunny, it was time for the finishing touches! We added googly eyes and big smiling faces, giving each lemon its own silly personality. No two lemons looked exactly alike, and that made them even more special.
Finally, we read the words “You’re the Zest!” The children learned that Zest is the fragrant outer peel of a lemon, full of bright citrus flavour and aroma. Just like lemon zest adds something special to a recipe, our children bring energy, kindness, laughter, and personality to our classrooms every day.
They’re truly the zest… and, of course, the best!
