We have been exploring identity through art, using it to express ourselves and understand who we are.
The children have already created self-portraits, so now we are shifting our focus to something just as meaningful. Their names!
Our own name is an important part of our identity. We want each child to feel proud of their name. For our new art project, we will spend two weeks transforming initials into art.
To start with, each child received a base for their artwork, a square of thick cardboard. On each piece, we drew smaller squares within the larger square to act as painting guidelines.
The children then began painting within these sections using brightly colored poster paint. They were encouraged to choose their own colors, with the added challenge of not placing the same colors next to each other. This helped create bold, eye-catching designs. We made sure to fully cover the surface so that no cardboard showed through.
Working with poster paint introduced the children to its unique texture and the balance needed when mixing it with water. Activities like this not only encourage creativity and self-expression, but also help develop fine motor control.
We’re very excited to see these pieces dry so we can continue with the next stage of the project. The colors are already so vibrant and really pop, and we can’t wait to see the finished results!
